Sculptural design inspired by the natural and spiritual worlds

Celebrating the role of nature in African mysticism
The Vula Collection draws on the poetry of found objects and their long history in African mysticism to create sculptural pieces with functional aspects. Our collections celebrate the African spiritual tradition of ephonsa amathambo. In a bone-throwing ritual, a sangoma or shaman scatters divination objects to read the signs from the spirits.
The shaman is led to each item in his personal collection of bones by the ancestors. There is a felt connection.
Vula artists visit natural spaces to listen to the whispers of their ancestors, which call them to certain aspects of their surroundings. This reverence for nature underpins every Vula sculpture.
